چکیده

It is shown that landscape variability decreases the temperature in the surface layer when, through mesoscale flow, cool air intrudes over warm patches, lifting warm air and weakening the static stability of the upper part of the planetary boundary layer. This mechanism generates regions of upward vertical motion and a sizable amount of available potential energy and can make the environment of the lower troposphere more favorable to cloud formation. This process is enhanced by light ambient wind through the generation of trapped propagating waves, which penetrate into the midtropospheric levels, transporting upward the thermal perturbations and weakening the static stability around the top of the boundary layer. At moderate ambient wind speeds, the presence of surface roughness changes strengthens the wave activity, further favoring the vertical transport of the thermal perturbations. When the intensity of the ambient wind is larger than 5 m s , the vertical velocities induced by the surface roughness changes prevail over those induced by the diabatic flux changes. The analysis is performed using a linear theory in which the mesoscale dynamics are forced by the diurnal diabatic sensible heat flux and by the surface stress. Results are shown as a function of ambient flow intensity and of the wavelength of a sinusoidal landscape variability.

Assessment of Landscape Connectivity and Prediction of Migration Corridors for the Baluchistan Black Bear (Ursus thibetanus gedrosianus Blanford, 1877) in the Southeastern Habitats, Iran

The Baluchistan Black Bear (BBB), a critically endangered subspecies (CR), is distributed in the southeastern Iran. Modelling of landscape connectivity of the BBBs among habitat patches can be insightful for the conservation managers working in Iran. Our study was designed to identify the potential corridors among 31 habitat patches of the BBBs in Iran using the circuit theory method. Habitat s...

Experimental Studies on Savonius-type Vertical Axis Turbine for Low Marine Current Velocity

Renewable energy resources need to be explored to maintain and meet energy demand and replace the slowly depleting fossil fuels.  Malaysia, surrounded by sea with long coastlines, is poised to exploit the potential of this energy. This research work aims at designing a suitable device to extract energy from Malaysian sea current.  Malaysia’s ocean has a low current velocity averaging 0.56 m/s, ...

Blast Design for Improved Productivity using a Modified Available Energy Method

In this work, a new drilling and blasting design methodology is introduced and applied at a case study mine to improve productivity. For the case study copper mine, a blast diameter of 203 mm is proposed to be used in the ore zone to meet the new required production rate of 90mtpa from 75mtpa. Currently, the Konya and Walter’s model is used to generate drilling and blasting design at a bl...

The roles of dynamical variability and aerosols in cirrus cloud formation

The probability of occurrence of ice crystal number densities in young cirrus clouds is examined based on airborne measurements. The observations have been carried out at midlatitudes in both hemispheres at equivalent latitudes (52 − 55 N/S) during the same season (local autumn in 2000). The in situ measurements considered in the present study include temperatures, vertical velocities, and tota...

Predicting the Climatology of Tornado Occurrences in North America with a Bayesian Hierarchical Modeling Framework*

Destruction and fatalities from recent tornado outbreaks in North America have raised considerable concerns regarding their climatic and geographic variability. However, regional characterization of tornado activity in relation to large-scale climatic processes remains highly uncertain. Here, a novel Bayesian hierarchical framework is developed for elucidating the spatiotemporal variability of ...
